#KAREN O RAPT LYRICS FULL#

Incredibly lo-fi, even in comparison to Home – an album defined by its home recorded qualities - Crush Songs is chalked full of seemingly uninspired guitar arrangements and simplistic lyrics that rarely surpass the complexity of campfire music. Even the two songs released ahead of the album, “Rapt,” and “Day Go By” - both great songs on their own - feel abrupt in their delivery on the album, quickly ending with no transfer or fade out. This is most evident in tracks like “Visits,” and “NYC Baby,” the latter of which clocks in at a whopping 57 seconds. And by the end of the record, all these short bursts end up feeling like nothing more than good ideas. Most tracks simply end right after they begin, never becoming fully realized. Much like Home, the songs are there, and for the most part they all sound pretty good, but the album has no connective thread. No song clocks in at over 3 minutes, and because of that, the LP feels more like a brief collection of demos similar to O’s stolen & leaked 2006 project KO at Home. Perhaps the biggest issue plaguing Crush Songs is that it doesn’t actually feel like “the first official solo album” it’s being touted as. And fans expecting anything like her previous two, more polished solo efforts (The aforementioned “Moon Song” or the entire Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack), or anything by the YYYs may find themselves disappointed in both the album’s brevity and minimalistic attitude, or possibly refreshed by the change. After further announcements regarding the history of the album’s recordings, it would become apparent that the timing was nothing more than coincidence, though, with the LP simply being a collection of unreleased home recordings dating back to 2006. In the months that followed, fans’ requests for that new music were thought to be answered, as a new solo single seemingly morphed into a full length LP titled Crush Songs. The track, the performance, and the critical acclaim that came with both would reassure fans - still let down by a 4-year YYY’s hiatus that ended with a release of Mosquito (one of the worst albums of 2013) - that there was still hope for the rock queen.

Fans begged for more new music from her, or at the least a pressing of “The Moon Song” on wax, and the timing seemed perfect. The track, titled “The Moon Song,” is well received by fans and critics alike, while even nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, allowing for a short, but none-the-less tear inducing duet between Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and O. Review submitted by Zachary Behm/ year is 2013, and Karen O - lead singer of indie rock act the Yeah Yeah Yeahs has just shared a solo track she wrote for the Spike Jonze directed film, Her.
